A Marine Study was first published under the title A Marine Study-New York Harbor as a plate photogravure in the February, 1892 issue of Sun & Shade. The following comments appeared in the index describing the photograph:
This picture was enlarged from a 4 by 5 plate taken with a Scovill Detective Camera, Morrison’s Rapid Rectilinear Lens. Shutter at full speed (about 1/60 of a second) on an Eagle Orthochromatic plate. It was developed with Eikonogen and Hydroquinone. The exposure was made from the bow of a steam yacht about 6.30 P.M. last August. 1.
