Editorial comment on this plate:

We present our readers this week with the second picture of the series by Maximilian Toch, illustrating his “Photographic Trip in the Torrid Zone.” The second chapter of the interesting account follows, and in it will be found reference to the accompanying illustration. The picture is entirely different from the first one of the series, and yet is a perfectly characteristic scene in the country Mr. Toch so interestingly describes. It gives us a good idea of life in the Torrid Zone, and is, beside, an excellent specimen of landscape art. The next chapter of the series will describe the Tomb of Columbus, and will be accompanied by a photo-gravure of that interesting subject.
