Childhood appears as the frontis photograph in The American Annual of Photography and Photographic Times Almanac for 1891. Originally from England, Mendelssohn maintained a commercial studio in New York City, with the verso of an early cabinet card from around 1890 (Cambridge, MA Historical Society-portrait of Susan (Whitney) Dimock) listing his address as 545 A 5th Ave. (corner of 45th St.) in New York City along with New York & London W. Another studio address, believed to be from a later studio cabinet card,  lists 372 5th Ave. (N.W. corner of 35th street) Earlier in England, Mendelssohn’s work for “Large Portraits” won him distinction in the Northhampton Photographic Exhibition in 1884.
