Commenting in the accompanying catalogue letterpress, Alfred Horsley Hinton writes of this work by Bennett:

Very rich in colour, bold, and effective in contrast of deep shade and bright light is Mr. L.C. Bennett’s In the Pool, a reproduction of which forms one of our illustrations. Though very striking, it is not so true to the tones of nature as the Rubbish Burners, by the same artist, in which Mr. L.C. Bennett has displayed a keen perception of the picturesque possibilities of unpromising material. At times in these two pictures there is almost a sense of colour, which is rather surprising.
