A Merry Christmas to All


This is a rare surviving example of the December, 1890 Christmas cover for the New York periodical Sun & Shade, an Artistic Periodical issued from 1888-1896 featuring hand-pulled photogravure and collotype plates of original photographs and works of art.  American artist George Wharton Edwards (1859-1950) is responsible for the Art-Nouveau cover design, which incorporates a feminine representation of the Sun God Phoebus, (Apollo) one of the Olympian deities in Greek and Roman mythology, within the publication’s masthead, along with a plate camera at the upper right corner. Individual issues like this were priced in 1890 at 40¢ per issue or $4.00 per year.
