Sigismund Blumann called his process of hand-coloring a black and white photograph a “Pastelograph”, of which this is a fine example. Most likely taken on the California coast, this photograph also likely dates from before 1933, when the photographer was known to include his honorarium FRPS (Fellow, Royal Photographic Society-the year he gained the honor) along with his signature to his work. For scale, the figure of an unknown woman wearing a white dress can be seen standing just to the right of the second tree from the left.
