This is an example of Ralph Winwood Robinson’s (1862-1942) formal portrait work featuring an unknown woman and a little girl-most likely her daughter. The photo is mounted to a support engraved with the formal name of the studio: H.P. Robinson & Son as well as its’ two locations: Redhill & Guildford. The son of renowned English photographer Henry Peach Robinson, Ralph Robinson first opened his Rembrandt Studio in Redhill, Surrey in 1888 and later another studio 25 miles west in Guildford as early as 1891. A photographic journal from 1906 states the address for the Guildford studio was 147 High Street. The photograph surely succeeds in conveying that the sitters were comfortable in front of Robinson’s lens-the girl maintaining stoic patience while clutching a small children’s book in her right hand featuring an illustration of three small dogs on the cover.
