Die Kunst in der Photographie : 1907

1907 assessment of the state of art photography by editor Franz Goerke

For 1907, the 11th year (Elfter jahrgang) Die Kunst in der Photographie was issued, editor Franz Goerke provided a short commentary on the state of art photography and the changing public perception towards it his publication had provided during its’ last 11 years of publication. Goerke begins his comments with:

“The history of artistic efforts in the area of photography is a history of photography itself.”

The following observations are also made by Goerke:

Photography has generated it’s own school of art, like drawing and painting. The mocking smile of people comparing artistic photography as an aesthetic absurdity have changed, yielding a calm, considered view of it. Commenting on the violent controversies and essays on the topic, “Is photography an art?”, Goerke states the work itself has spoken, and photographers have proven they well deserve a place alongside the other high arts.  He also comments on the important role Die Kunst in der Photographie has played in the public acceptance of photography as an art form and how the work, in the form of the copper plate engravings included with it (photogravures) will be further evaluated in the future because they are now in museum collections. Goerke then goes on to compare the efforts the publication has had as a “fermentation”, a fight that has continued for 11 years. When first issued, he uses the metaphor that it was timid “when it first walked before the public!”  He concludes by saying the struggle (the acceptance of art photography) continues and that “we are still not at the goal.” He then says that in the study of the large masters of the applied arts we have the models which will continue to lead us to create new work.

Twenty large plate photogravures, many on watermarked laid paper, were issued for 1907. An additional 50 autotypes were also issued in 1907.

1907 comment by Franz Goerke as originally issued with the journal

Franz Goerke.
