This brother and sister portrait of John Beatty Jr. and sister was taken by Clarence White in 1904. It is signed on the photograph lower left: Clarence H White 04 and is additionally stamped with his Newark, OH handstamp on the verso of the mount.
The children’s father, John W. Beatty, was a Pittsburgh native and Art Director of the Carnegie Institute Art Gallery for 25 years, retiring in 1922. Beatty was responsible for putting on many of the well-known art exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute, including the very important exhibition there in February, 1904 by White and his fellow members of the Photo-Secession. His children included John Jr. and two daughters: Helen (who may be the subject of this photograph at right) and Katherine.
A portrait of John Jr. and Katherine appeared as a photogravure taken by White and included with Camera Work IX in 1905.
