A double-mounted vintage print showing an idyllic New England country lane, lined by white birch trees and briefly interrupted by a lone traveler, is the work of American amateur C.M. Whitney. This unsung photographer earned recognition as early as 1899, with his photograph “Looking Westward” included in the prestigious Second Annual Philadelphia Photographic Salon held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in that city.
