Geoffrey Roland Ballance: 1874-1934

Dating to 1908 or before, “In the Gorge at Tivoli” was published as a full-page halftone in the August, 1908 issue of the Photo-Era magazine of Boston. (1.) The image shows a waterfall in the steep gorge located north of Tivoli, in Italy. The gorge is known locally as the Valle d’Inferno (Valley of Hell). This example, with hand-coloring, was printed by Ballance sometime between 1924, when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and living in Menton, France, and 1930, when he had moved to Dunbartonshire in Scotland.
