Die Kunst in der Photographie : 1902

Introduction: Die Kunst in der Photographie: 1902

This group set features all plates (60) contained within the six individual issues (lieferung-installment) published for the 1902 yearly volume of  Die Kunst in der Photographie. This includes 36 hand-pulled photogravures and an additional 24 mounted autotype plates. (halftones) Each issue contained 6 photogravures and 4 autotypes. The half-title page-the first compiled letterpress page- states the following overview of work published in 1902:

The content of this year is dedicated to: the artist photographers of Germany, Austria, France, England, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Russia and America, especially the works of C. Puyo, Paris. (sixth issue was a Puyo issue)

Franz Goerke, publisher of Die Kunst in der Photographie, then provides his year-end message and analysis for the year. In particular, he spends a bit of this overview commenting on his concern the gum prints reproduced in the yearly compiled volume are not particularly up to his very high standard:  (translated from German)

Volume VI of “Art in Photography” is completed.

As in previous years, it was my effort in this work to show the current state of art photography using examples, so that this volume also provides a convincing image of honest creation, honest effort to elevate the photographic image to a work of art.

The first artist photographers at home and abroad have also stood by me loyally to achieve the goal that this work has in mind by giving me their best works for it. I would like to express my sincere thanks to them at this point.

If I have not given the rubber printing (GUMMIDRUCK) the appreciation it deserved through reproduction, if only a few masters of this artistic direction will be found in this volume, the fact is solely that the reproduction is not able to show the high artistic value of this technique to the viewer; on the contrary, the reproduction would often be a completely false image of these works, the artistic value of which is already indicated by the fact that both museums and private collections acquire them as permanent treasures. Nevertheless, it shall be my effort to ensure that they also be represented in the future in Art in Photography in the way they deserve, with the help of a greater improvement of the reproduction, and so to give as rounded a picture as possible of the various efforts and the various schools in art photography, true to the program.

So may this new volume go out and bring joy to all those in whose homes art has a place.

Franz Goerke.
