These two portraits of Dorothy Tucker (1899-1986) were most likely taken the same day outside her family home, then at 90 Third Street in the New Dorp section of Staten Island. (now demolished) Left: “Dorothy with Teddy Bear”; Right: “Dorothy with Kittens”, both, ca. 1906-07. Taken on the veranda of the home, the photos show Dorothy wearing the same wide-brimmed hat, decorated with daisy flowers, and dark dress with white long-sleeved shirt.
Built ca. 1904-05, the Tucker home was innovative, and quite radical for its time, as it was built nearly entirely of concrete. Because of this construction, photographs of Dorothy by her father with the home as backdrop were unintentionally provided clean backgrounds and sight-lines.
Charles Rollins Tucker, 1868-1956.
