Dorothy Reaching for Grapes outside Home

Dorothy Reaching for Grapes outside Home

Dorothy Tucker (1899-1986) reaches for a cluster of grapes growing on a vine against an exterior concrete block wall at her family home, then located at 90 Third Street in the New Dorp section of Staten Island. Nearly new (they were believed to be the second owners after W.J. Steel) when the Tucker’s moved in by 1906, the home was the subject of an extensive article illustrated with photographs (several showing Dorothy seated outside) in the August, 1906 issue of American Homes and Gardens magazine. Practically fireproof, the article stated: “With walls and partitions of hollow concrete blocks, floors and roof of reinforced concrete, it was the first building of this character to be constructed in New York City.”

Charles Rollins Tucker, 1868-1956.
