But Other Fell into Good Ground…

A farmhand sows seeds in the springtime, most likely taken in the Italian countryside. A dealer in rare coins along with his brother Henry, Philadelphia resident Samuel Hudson Chapman was an accomplished photographer and president of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia at the time of publication.

The following copy accompanies the work opposite, from the King James Version of the Bible’s Book of Matthew: “But other fell into Good Ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.”

Provenance

Acquired November, 2008 from dealer in Easton, MD. The seller stating the volume had been purchasedyears ago at a used book store on the Eastern shore of Maryland.  Many people retire to this area, so it probaly did not spend most of its life here. If you really, really worked at it, you might be able to find a connection between the author and the person to whom the book is inscribed, Rebecca Collins, I think.”
