This arched gateway ruin, partially walled in with stones, has been identified by this archive as being located in San Michele di Pagana, on the road between Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo. A period postcard of the gateway refers to its Madonnina, (Madonna) seen in the small shrine above the pediment. Further historical information welcomed.
Photographer Franz Goerke may have taken this photograph in the Fall of 1898, when he is known to have been photographing in Italy as part of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for the inauguration of the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem.
