This is a fine example of the original green Nieuwe Kunst (Art Nouveau) publishers binding for the 1906 yearly volume of the Dutch photographic journal Geïllustreerd Weekblad voor Fotografie (Illustrated Weekly Magazine for Photography). The design and typography were most likely done by a Dutch artist, but its creator is unknown as of this writing. Various woodcut recurring embellishments within the weekly pages: headlining columns for Criticism- “Voor De Critiek”, Question Box – “Vragenbus”, Variety- “Verscheidenheid” (with a stylized camera on tripod embedded within this design) and others all offer a clue to this artist: a small monogram, which is believed to read: FJZ. The cover also features this monogram, although it is difficult to make out. It is located just to the left of the bloom pointing to “Voor” at the center of the binding. Insight is always appreciated. Volumes in this archive for the years 1903, 1904 and 1906 feature this binding, and it is believed the design may go back to the late 1890s. (a private collection contains the volume 1901 also featuring this cover design)
