Seated on a ladderback chair, an unknown child model (girl or boy?) “knits” the American flag while dressed up in a bonnet and wearing spectacles. Patriotic themes such as this often appear in photographs that are professionally mass-produced from this era, although amateur examples done with specific intent are harder to come by.
Betsy Ross, (1752 –1836) born Elizabeth Griscom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is widely credited with making the first American flag. There is, however, no credible historical evidence that the story is true. (1.)
