The following poem by Alice Elliot appears full-page opposite this photograph by Nichol Elliot, Cloister in Bavaria:
Quest of Beauty.
ALL loveliness to follow was his quest,
All loveliness to fathom, his desire:
His ardent spirit fed her altar fire;
And every tree-trunk, every gleaming west,
Each tone of light, each shadow filmiest, ⎯
Waysides, clear waters, archway, mossy byre, ⎯
All changeful faces ⎯would his heart inspire
With artist longing, quenchless in its zest.
The face, the form, the mystic heart of things
Whispered God’s yearning to him hour by hour,
And mingled deep with nature’s living pow’r ⎯
Ideals, energies, adventurings ⎯
Till stirred, uplifted, winged, his eager soul,
Heroic battling, rose to Beauty’s Goal.
