Editorial comment on this plate:

Our picture this week is by the distinguished photographer, Mr. John E. Dumont. Mr. Dumont was one of the Committee of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce appointed to entertain the officers of the Caravels, and having a steamer at his disposal he was enabled to secure some fine pictures of these historical ships. The negative from which our photogravure is made was obtained at 5 o’clock in the morning, when the Caravels were about five miles off Charlotte, with an exposure of the one-fiftieth part of a second.
