Title: Three-color image: after nature

This is one of the first published examples of a Miethe process three-color photograph from nature. 

“Miethe’s discovery of the proper staining materials to make photographic plates completely panchromatic was a major breakthrough.” 1.

A technical report in Photographische Rundschau was included with this reproduced color plate and indicated Miethe had taken the photograph using a small, three-color camera of his own design and construction the previous September (1902). It is not known if the actual camera he used was one built by Wilhelm Bermpohl known as a “three-color repeating back” Dreifarben-Camera, but it is certainly possible.  The following is this technical report referring to the color plate:

Zur Dreifarben-Photographie unseres Heftes

“Die diesem Hefte beigegebene autotypische Reproduktion einer Dreifarbenaufnahme ist nach einem Original von Prof. Dr. A. Miethe hergestellt und gibt einen Begriff von den Fortschritten, die auf dem Gebiet der indirekten Farbensynthese gemacht sind. Die Aufnahme wurde an einem hellen, aber sonnenlosen Tage im September, vormittags zwischen 10 und 11 Uhr, gefertigt und diente dazu die von Prof. Miethe konstruierte kleine Dreifarben-Kamera, die auf einem Plattenstreifen von 9 X 24 cm die drei Teilbilder erzeugt. Die Platte war eine Äthylrot-Badeplatte, das Objektiv wurde auf f/12 abgeblendet, die Expositionszeiten betrugen für Blau, Grün, Rot 1½, ¾, 1¾ Sekunden. Die Kürze der Exposition bedingt die Möglichkeit, selbst derartige flüchtige Momente mit ziemlich unsicheren Stellungen der Modelle zu fixieren, und die Farbenwiedergabe, die allerdings im Druckverfahren selbst bei dessen geschicktester Ausführung immer etwas leidet, lässt wenig zu wünschen übrig.”  2.

One year after this plate was published in Photographische Rundschau, Miethe authored a 1904 volume on this color process published by Wilhelm Knapp: Dreifarbenphotographie nach der Natur : nach den am photochemischen Laboratorium der technischen Hochschule zu Berlin angewandten Methoden.
