This landscape view with two hay mounds is believed to be from a negative by California photographer Sigismund Blumann. The finished print shown here is known to be by Blumann’s hand- produced in his darkroom using known techniques.
Recto: Hand-colored lithobrome print using dyes. Unsigned. The photographer used an extremely fine “honeycomb” mesh screen mask- evident on magnification- to diffuse the overall look of the finished print.
Provenance
Acquired for this archive from Michaan’s Auctions, Alameda, CA: August 16, 2024, Lot # 3245; From the late Stephen Headley’s Collection, former owner of Osceola Gallery, Emeryville, California.
