Editorial comment for this plate:
GENERAL SHERMAN.
THE life-like portrait of General Sherman which we are permitted to give our readers this week will be especially appreciated by those who have become interested in his life through the memoirs which our publishers are offering in connection with this Magazine and the Cosmopolitan.
The portrait was made by Mr. Gutekunst, of Philadelphia, and is certainly no exception to that high standard of excellence which he has maintained in his series of portraits of eminent Americans. The reproduction is also by Mr. Gutekunst, and is entirely satisfactory. General Sherman’s life and character are too well known to require any treatment at our hands. We simply present the portrait of this honored, we might almost say, revered chieftain, sure of the cordial welcome which it will receive by all who see this magazine.
