Louise Birt Baynes: Photographer & Naturalist

A side-cropped version of Golden-rod was published as a full-page halftone plate in the March, 1904 issue of the photographic journal Photo Era paired with another photograph by Baynes titled Yarrow.

The poem penned on the mount recto can be traced to two different sources: the first two lines appear in Golden-Rod  by Lucy Larcom in her collection of poetry published in 1881: Wild roses of Cape Ann. The last two lines appear in the poem My Autumn Walk by William Cullen Bryant published in the Atlantic Monthly. (1865)

“As lavish of it’s golden light-
as sunshine’s self.”

And the purple aster waves”
