Made of staff, a temporary material composed of plaster, cement and jute fibers and covered in gold leaf, the Statue of the Republic at center of this photograph was the most imposing sculpture on the fairgrounds, standing 65′ in height and located atop a pedestal overlooking the Grand Basin. She was sculpted by American Daniel Chester French. (1850-1931)
