The following poem by Alice Elliot appears full-page opposite this photograph by Nichol Elliot, In Berlin:
The Pillar in the Shadow.
THE archway frames ⎯in ambient light displayed, ⎯
A fane that gold and pride imperial wove;
Yet lovelier here, as ‘neath arcaded grove,
This polished marble shaft, within the shade
Half hid, ⎯ by glint of rounded grace betrayed
To eager eyes, on beauty’s quest that rove,
And insight lighting swift on treasure trove
Through glimmering twilight of its ambuscade.
Enshrined in still recesses of the heart,
Reflecting clear and soft the Light Divine,
Ideals lofty dwell, that rise and gleam
Half undiscerned, though life’s uplifting part;
The rock of manhood shaped to Purpose fine,
The pillared loyalty alight with dream.
