A Shepard leads his herd of sheep back to their holding pen. Historically, the phrase “returning to the fold” also has Biblical connotations: in Christian discourse, a Sheepfold refers to Christian society or congregations. It’s an extension of the metaphor of Christians as sheep being guarded and cared for by a shepherd.
