Old Mill: Picton, New Jersey

The Village of Picton, New Jersey, located in Union County, was described in the 1915 volume: The Industrial Directory of New Jersey. Aturbine wheel water power of 20 horse capacity” cited in the description could refer to the mill seen in this photograph:

On the Lehigh Valley Railroad, station in the village. Twelve passenger trains in and out daily. Population, about 500. Banking town, Rahway, distant two miles. Mail by R. F. D.; telephone, but no telegraph. Express service, United States Company. Value of taxable property, $986,000.

farming district, the soil of which is very good. All lands under cultivation, and none for sale except such as are held by realty concerns on sale as building lots. There are two public schools in the village, primary and grammar. turbine wheel water power of 20 horse capacity exists hereA manufacturing industry would find this a good locationalthough there seems to be no particular inducements offered to attract such enterprises. The transportation service is good, and could be enlarged to meet any possible demand; the capacity of the water power could be increased, and labor in sufficient numbers can be obtained without difficulty. For further particulars, address Wm. J. Thompson, Assessor, Rahway, R. F. D. No. 1. The only industry in the place is the works of the American Felt Co.,. makers of felt from cotton goods; 110 men and one woman are employed. (pp. 424-25)

This pleasing landscape study was found in a collection of photographs formerly owned by C.R. Tucker, and may be an example of his work.
