The following poem by Alice Elliot appears full-page opposite this photograph by Nichol Elliot, On Academic Ground, Toronto:
The Shadowed Doorway.
GRACE, gravity, in one ⎯of lucid shade ⎯
Half veil the portal like a pensive smile,
And light with dark divinely reconcile,
Yes, lend the doorway Awe’s enthralling aid,
Still wont untrodden thresholds to pervade, ⎯
Beyond which lies, fast shut from us awhile,
The Unknown, ⎯a tender dimness to beguile
And thrill the throbbing heart, in wonder half afraid.
For thresholds crossed are life’s eternal hours,
Thresholds of home, of heart, of seraph soul,
Of marvel, morning dawn, or mortal fear, ⎯
Still veiled, yet thrilled, of God, with mystic pow’rs,
That whisper while we near the shadowed goal:
“Seen or unseen, all depth divine is clear.”
