Hess was a Member of the Photo-Secession founded by Alfred Stieglitz. This undated photograph (1.)  showing an unknown woman writing is pencil-signed by Hess on the main support recto outside lower right-hand corner of triple mount.

1. Work by Hess can be found from late 1890’s into the early 20th Century. This portrait is perhaps circa 1900-1905.
