Editorial comment for this plate:

Our plate. (translated)

This time we give a heliogravure, after a recording by the well-known art photographer, Mr. W. H. Idzerda in The Hague.

Although it has not been possible to reproduce in this helio the harmony that is striking in the original, we can nevertheless point to the personality that speaks from the portrait of this professor, to the great simplicity of the treatment, which is free from any attempt to hunt for effect.

Here we have a truly modern portrait. If we compare it with a similar recording from fifteen to twenty years ago, then we can see for the first time how we have progressed in that time. We owe that to the art direction – also in the field of portraiture.

The recently promised article by Mr. Idzerda on the modern portrait will soon appear.

Wieger Hendricus Idzerda: 1872-1938

W.H. Idzerda was a Dutch photographer, cameraman and film director. Idzerda was a representative of pictorialism , a movement in photography related to impressionism . In 1908, Idzerda was a member of the organizing committee of the ‘International Exhibition of Photographic Art’, organized by the Amsterdam Amateur Photographers Association. In the first three decades of the twentieth century, he wrote several manuals for amateur photographers, in which he expressed his vision of photography. These compact manuals were printed and sold in considerable numbers. – Wikipedia
