This modernist landscape study of a sandy beach is shot in the soft-focus pictorialist style by photographer Sigismund Blumann. The composition effectively uses the white line made by the residue of sea foam deposited by a retreating wave as a way of intersecting his larger frame composed by the expanse of out-of-focus sand in the foreground and line of rocks with a wave crashing into them for the background. Acquired directly from the family of the photographer, the location for this photograph is believed to be the shoreline in the area of Land’s End or Inverness in Marin County, California.
