“SHOEING THE MARE.”

We take pleasure in presenting our readers this week with another specimen of Mr. C. H. Miller’s artistic photography. He will be remembered as the author of “An Old Highway” and ” The Village Mill,” which have already been published in THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES. The present picture was made at a small village in Pike County, Pennsylvania.

” The old man on the nail keg,” Mr. Miller writes,”is nearly seventy years of age, and never before had his picture taken. We had a hard time trying to get him to sit, for he did not know what the camera was, and it took a long time to explain to him what it was for.” Such a subject in these days is rare indeed. The picture was made on a Carbutt “Eclipse” plate, with a Beck lens.

Although not definitive at this writing, C.H. Miller may be Long Island, N.Y. painter Charles Henry Miller. Information welcome.

Charles Henry Miller: 1842-1922, was an artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor (1825–1878) called him, “The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island.”—Wikipedia (2026)
