When this photograph was published in 1904, F.H. Kok was a resident of Tjilatjap, then part of the Dutch East Indies. Indonesia declared independence at the end of World War II, in 1945,  leading to the Indonesian War of Independence. Indonesia and the Netherlands made peace in 1949.
