The subject matter of this photograph is the Ca’ Vendramin Calergi palace, which was owned at the time by Prince Henry, Count of Bardi. Prince Henry was part of the royal contingent of photographers showing their work during the 1891 Vienna exhibition. (four Venetian studies: frame #’s 11-14)
Ca’ Vendramin Calergi is a palace on the Grand Canal in the sestiere (quarter) of Cannaregio in Venice, northern Italy. Other names by which it is known include: Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, Palazzo Loredan Vendramin Calergi, and Palazzo Loredan Griman Calergi Vendramin. The architecturally distinguished building was the home of many prominent people through history, and is remembered as the place where composer Richard Wagner died. (1.)

Blatt I: stellt eine Architecturstudie aus Venedig, aufgenommen von Ihrer k. und k. Hoheit Frau Erzherzogin Maria Theresia, dar. Es ist ein kleiner Palast, der sich in der Meerfluth spiegelt und ein reizendes Bild abgiebt. Die hübsche Wirkung wird noch dadurch erhöht, dass die Photogravure in ganz lichtblauer Farbe gedruckt ist. Himmel und Wasser gewinnen dadurch bedeutend an Natürlichkeit. (2.)
