Sunday in Sussex

Sunday in Sussex

A study in light and dark peering into a Sussex barn.  A horse can be seen peering in from the very back of the composition, which contains a corn or grain sheller at far left, a hay cart at center and bales of hay, with light striking a hay-filled trough at far right. The artist is believed to be Margaret Florence Banks: 1872-1949.

Banks was born on 4 July in Everton, Liverpool, England. England & Wales Census records from 1891, 1901 & 1911 give her occupation as dressmaker. As of this writing, no other details could be gleaned from secondary or other sources regarding her work as an amateur photographer. Please contact this site should you have information on the artist.

Sussexis an area of South East England that was historically a kingdom and, later, a county. The current ceremonial counties of East Sussex and West Sussex cover approximately the same area. The two ceremonial counties border Surrey to the north, Kent to the north-east, the English Channel to the south, and Hampshire to the west. Sussex contains the city of Brighton and Hove and its wider city region, part of the South Downs National Park and the national landscape of the High Weald, and Chichester Harbour. Its coastline is 137 miles (220 km) long. -Wikipedia accessed August, 2025
