The First Communion

The following editorial comment regarding this plate appears on p. 99:

EDITORIAL NOTES.

The picture which appears as our frontispiece tells its own story. The little girl on the way to receive the Holy Communion is the daughter of Lou Simons, the well-known negro minstrel. Mr. Gutekunst, the author of the picture, says: “Is there a stronger contrast imaginable than the tale this picture tells us?” We imagine not.

This archive has attributed the plate to the Gutekunst atelier although this information is not printed on it.
