This unusual photogravure shows the original background of a road through a forest made into a roundel image, with the roadway stripped out from the larger negative in the foreground, creating a visual framing device leading the viewer through the composition.

E.C. McDonald was a well known commercial photographer from South Bend, Indiana. In 1914, he was listed as a professional photographer in an advertisement reprinted in the November 21 issue of Abel’s Photographic Weekly
