Tissue Guard: Les Joueurs de Cartes

Tissue Guard: Les Joueurs de Cartes

For this first year 1894 exposition portfolio and subsequent 1895 folio, each plate featured a printed tissue guard with the following in sequential order from top to bottom: the plate reference number, the name of the photographer, (most guards listed first and last names although this example only has a last name) the photographer’s city/municipality and home country, and title of the photograph.

The guards were lightly glued outside of the impressed plate mark for each image or suite of images issued with the folios. Printed tissue guards were discontinued for the 1896 & 1897 folios. Interleaving tissues were instead issued for these compilations. The 1896 folio has blind-stamped plate numbers on the lower right hand corner of each plate. The 1897 folio was issued in the same location with printed plate numbers.
