Cathedral Basilica of Zacatecas (Our Lady of the Zacatecas)
Catedral basílica de Zacatecas (Nuestra Señora de los Zacatecas)
The origin of the Cathedral was a parish that began construction in 1568 and was completed 17 years later. In its place, a new church was built in September 1625 and then a third, in August 1752, which is the one that remains until today. Churrigueresque or ultra-baroque style, it has three facades and two towers, one of which supports a bell forged with the jewels and coins of Zacatecan devotees. The main façade is dedicated to the Eucharist, the north façade to the Holy Christ and the south façade to Our Lady of the Zacatecas, patron saint of the city. The main façade consists of three sections and a top with various representations. Inside the Cathedral, the Doric style predominates with large columns and neoclassical stone altars. The floor plan is a Latin cross and the two side naves have a vault that is lower in height than the central one. In the interior arches there are various Marian symbols – gate of heaven, morning star, etc. -, elements of the Passion – the coins of Judas, the spear of longinus, the edict of Pilate, etc., as well as images of saints, martyrs, doctors and evangelists, all of which represent the history of Christianity. ⎯ SIC MÉXICO –The Cultural Information System (SIC)
