This photograph is used to illustrate the chapter titled Sur la Lumière Artificielle (artificial lighting) beginning on page #34.
For this photograph lit by an artificial light source, Constant Puyo has constructed his studio space to resemble a back stage setting, with the female model poised with dagger-in-hand peering out of a small slit in a nearby curtain. The large circular charger seen in the shadows at left of model is a prop that shows up in other Puyo photographs from this era. This hand-pulled photogravure plate is a tour-de-force of gravure printing, with the details of studio accoutrements showing up fully in the saturated shadow areas of the plate.
