Winter Joy“, Adolf Fassbender, American, born Germany, 1884-1980, vintage bromide Christmas Card, ca. 1935-1955, 13.6 x 10.0 | 16.6 x 12.6 | 20.2 x 15.1 cm. A child is pulled on a sled through fresh snow inside New York’s Central Park, with the former Sherry Netherland and Savoy Plaza Hotels rising in the background. The front of this card (recto) had been remounted and once framed, and in the collection of former Camera Craft editor Sigismund Blumann on his passing in 1956. Fassbender, a contributor to Blumann’s later journal Photo Art Monthly, was known to send photographic cards like this one featuring winter and religious themes to friends and associates during the holidays. Another card owned by this archive contains this sentiment arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree: “May the beauty of this Christmas inspire you and yours throughout the New Year” —The Fassbenders. The artist utilized a copy negative incorporating a masked border with title and signature for these cards. From: PhotoSeed Archive
