Eduard Christian Arning: 1855-1936

The dermatologist and venereologist Dr. Arning learned photography for the purpose of a study trip to the Hawaiian Islands, which he undertook from 1883 to 1886 on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. The aim was to research leprosy and to create an ethnographic collection. Arning was one of the first men to be part of the committee of the Hamburg Photo Exhibition in 1893 and was a long-standing board member of the Hamburg Amateur Photographers Association, from which the Society for the Promotion of Amateur Photography Hamburg emerged in 1895.
