Perhaps no older than 10, Sigismund Blumann’s daughter Lorna (1.) irons clothing in her family’s kitchen at 3217 Davis Street in Fruitvale, (Oakland) California. A early example of “at home” portraiture as practiced by the photographer.

1. Lorna Veronica Blumann: 1908-1982. Never married, her professional career was that of a librarian in Oakland, CA.

Print Notes

Verso: Early, pasted white and yellow paper label 5.6 x 13.6 cm engraved: SIGISMUND BLUMANN 3217 Davis Street Fruitvale, California with hand-written title and process in black ink by hand of the photographer: “Blue Monday”  Bromide; this is a very early example of a vintage print by Blumann believed to have been printed before 1920.

-The backing matt for this photograph is a cut colored lithograph promotional poster for American musical composer Frederic Knight Logan (1871-1928): “Compositions that should be in your music collection”, along with his stylized portrait. Logan was known as America’s “Waltz King.”
