In Lincoln Cathedral

Human Presence & Spiritual Presence

Frederick Evans became known for his finely composed and printed architectural photography in the 1890s and 1900s. He was particularly interested in exploring the spatial effects created by light and perspective in church and cathedral interiors. But he was also inspired by a form of esoteric mysticism that looked for connections between the material and the spiritual. In this photograph, the doorway suggests the possibility of a human presence, while the light entering from an unseen window embodies a spiritual presence.- V&A Museum, London
