The following poem by Alice Elliot appears full-page opposite this photograph by Nichol Elliot, In Oakville, Ontario:
An Old Wayside Orchard in May.
ALL hail to Maytime’s radiancy of glee,
Her gleams and shadows on the vernal grass,
That laugh and hover lightly as they pass,
Her blossom frolic in some ancient tree
‘Mid mighty branched and vistaed wizardry,
Fit haunt for him that sung of Lycidas ⎯
Where dapple grace and tree-trunks’ noble mass
Are vision winged to set the spirit free!
For free and blithe with all L’Allègro mirth
His heart who feels the magic Nature made
In lustre, line, and blossom’s floating shade,
Who thrills in kindred rapture with the earth,
And by the wayside find, like waiting goal,
An Avenue of Beauty for the Soul.
