The former Marie Berna, (born New York: 1846-died Büdesheim/Hessen) who later became Countess Marie Oriola, (Gräfin Marie Oriola) became a member of the Free Photographic Association in Berlin in 1896. She may be best remembered today however for commissioning the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin to paint his masterpiece: Island of the Dead in 1880. This painting is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
