Born in Dresden, Rau, 1856-1928, was a gifted amateur art photographer who was a partner of the graphic institute for art affiliated with Meisenbach, Riffarth & Co. in Berlin.  In this capacity, he was an engraver. As a painter, Rau is perhaps best known for his  landscapes.

This well-known Rau photograph was taken in 1894.
