Holländische Bäuerin | Dutch Farmer

With a kitten cradled on her lap, a woman-identified in the title as a Dutch Farmer, (Farmer’s wife?) sits next to a large basket in front of a doorway-averting her eyes away from the photographer. This is the 2nd photogravure of seven included within Art historian Richard Stettiner’s text essay printed for the portfolio, which can be found under the group heading for this work. Pagination on index page indicates Johan F.J. Huysser was from Overveen in Holland.

Johan F.J. Huijsser: 1868-1924

Abstract: Depth of Field | Scherptediepte

Johan Huijsser, in photography literature known primarily as Joh. F.J. Huijsser, belonged—together with his brothers Frans and Henri—to a group of amateur photographers who played an important role in the period of Dutch Pictorialism. Huijsser was a merchant by profession and ran the family company, E&A Scheer, an import dealer in distilled goods. In addition to his work and a family of six children, Johan Huijsser took time for his hobbies: bicycle racing and photography. Huijsser’s photographic work consists of portraits, genre representations, seascapes, and Dutch landscapes. His bromoil prints, photos shot with a monocle lens, and lantern slide plates won dozens of exhibition medals. Huijsser himself regularly sat on exhibition juries. For years he was a member of the AAFV (Amsterdamsche Amateur-Fotografen Vereniging, ‘Amsterdam Amateur Photographers Association’) and chairman of the AFV in Bloemendaal. Huijsser was forced to take breaks from his work due to asthma, which ultimately was ultimately the cause of his death at a relatively young age. (1.)
