Sketching on Monhegan Island
The Monhegan Museum, which holds a black & white variant of this image, identifies the three people shown, all American artists. Seated while sketching is Eric Hudson, (1864-1932); leaning over him is Alice Swett, (1846-1916) while Maud Briggs Knowlton (1870-1956) stands at far right. Knowlton and Swett were the first two women artists in the Monhegan Island artists’ colony, while maritime painter Eric Hudson’s work and papers can be found at the Smithsonian.
